E-Discovery for Criminal Defense

Search it. Code it.
Produce it, Bates-numbered.

REGULA is e-discovery software for criminal defense attorneys. Upload the discovery, search inside the documents, tag and privilege-code them, and disclose a Bates-stamped production with an index and a privilege log, all inside the same case file you draft from.

Short Answer

REGULA is an AI paralegal for criminal defense with built-in e-discovery tools. Attorneys upload discovery to a case, search inside the documents by what they say, tag them and flag privileged ones, and create productions: sets of documents disclosed under a Bates prefix. Finalizing a production assigns page-accurate Bates numbers; the download is a zip of stamped PDFs, a production index, and a privilege log for withheld documents. Uploads, downloads, review changes, and productions are audit-logged, and two-step verification by emailed code is available. REGULA reads text documents today; body camera video and audio are not processed yet.

What You Get

From the State’s discovery packet to your own disclosure.

Ingest and organize

Drop in the arrest affidavit and discovery packets. Every document lands in the case file, with a plain-language AI summary, next to the Evidence Vault and Discovery Vault.

Search inside documents

Find the passage, not just the file. Full-text search over each PDF’s text and summary, with quoted phrases, exclusions, highlighted matches, and tag filters.

Tag and privilege-code

Code each document with your own tags and a privilege flag. Review work stays with the case and feeds what you produce or withhold.

Bates-numbered productions

Build a disclosure set, finalize it, and download stamped PDFs with a production index and a privilege log. Numbering is frozen and continues across productions.

Audit trail

Uploads, downloads, review coding, and every production create, finalize, and export are logged, so you can show what was done and when.

Enterprise-grade hosting

Hosted on enterprise-grade, SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001 certified cloud infrastructure, with owner-only access, inactivity timeouts, and optional emailed-code two-step verification.

How A Production Works

Five steps, from upload to a stamped set.

  1. 1

    Upload the discovery

Add PDFs and images to the case. REGULA reads each document’s text and writes a summary.

  2. 2

    Search and code

Search inside the documents, then tag them and mark anything privileged.

  3. 3

    Create a production

Name it, set a Bates prefix, choose the documents, and withhold what should not go out.

  4. 4

    Finalize

REGULA counts each file’s pages and freezes the Bates ranges. A finalized production cannot be edited or deleted.

  5. 5

    Download the set

Get a zip of Bates-stamped PDFs, a production index, and a privilege log for withheld documents.

Works today

  • PDF, PNG, and JPEG files uploaded to a case
  • Search inside PDFs that have a text layer; scanned PDFs are found by name and AI summary
  • Tags, privilege coding, and review notes on every document
  • Bates-stamped production sets with an index and a privilege log
  • An audit log of uploads, downloads, review changes, and productions

Straight Answers

Questions attorneys ask about e-discovery in REGULA.

What is REGULA’s e-discovery software?

REGULA includes e-discovery tools built for criminal defense attorneys: you upload the discovery on a case, search inside the documents, tag and privilege-code them, and produce Bates-numbered disclosure sets as a zip of stamped PDFs with a production index and a privilege log.

It sits inside REGULA, the AI paralegal for criminal defense, next to the Discovery Vault, Defense Prep analysis of your discovery, motion drafting, and docket tracking, so the discovery you review is the same discovery the rest of the case file works from.

Who is it for?

Solo criminal defense attorneys and small defense firms that receive discovery from the State and, at times, need to organize, review, and disclose documents of their own.

It is built for the size and shape of a criminal discovery packet, not for an enterprise civil litigation review with millions of documents, and it does not claim to replace that kind of platform.

Can I search inside my discovery documents?

Yes. When you upload a PDF, REGULA reads its text layer so you can search what the document says, not just its file name. Search supports quoted phrases and excluding a word, highlights the matching passage, and can be limited to a tag.

Scanned, image-only PDFs have no text layer to read, so those are found by file name and REGULA’s AI summary of the document. Search runs only inside the case you are looking at, and only your own documents are ever searched.

Does REGULA do Bates numbering and productions?

Yes. You create a production with a Bates prefix, choose the documents, and finalize it. REGULA counts each file’s real pages, assigns consecutive Bates ranges, and exports a zip with every page stamped (for example DEF000041), a production index, and a privilege log for withheld documents.

A finalized production is frozen as the record of what was disclosed. A later production with the same prefix continues the numbering instead of reusing numbers. PDF, PNG, and JPEG files can be stamped; anything else must be withheld or removed rather than produced unnumbered.

How does it handle privileged documents?

You mark a document privileged, and it is added to a production already withheld. Withheld documents get no Bates number and appear on the privilege log with the basis you choose, such as attorney-client privilege or attorney work product.

The attorney decides what is privileged; REGULA does not make that call. Your tags and review notes are never written to the privilege log.

Is my discovery secure, and is access tracked?

REGULA is hosted on enterprise-grade, SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001 certified cloud infrastructure. Documents are available only to the attorney who owns the case, and uploads, downloads, review changes, and every production event are written to an audit log.

You can turn on two-step verification, which emails a 6-digit code after your password before a new device can sign in. Sessions also expire after a period of inactivity. Two-step verification protects against a leaked password; it is not a substitute for protecting your email account.

Does it process body camera video or audio?

REGULA reads text documents today: PDFs, including scanned pages. Body camera and dashcam video, 911 and jail call audio, and phone extractions cannot be uploaded for processing yet, and REGULA says so when you try.

Reviewing body camera footage is on the roadmap. See the Text-Only Documents page for exactly what works today and what is coming.

Does it replace my review of the discovery?

No. REGULA is software, not a law firm. It organizes, searches, and packages discovery, but the attorney of record reviews the documents, decides what to produce or withhold, and is responsible for every disclosure.
